‘Now is the time to think about yourself.’

Selfish eh? This is a line I utter to myself often, whenever someone talks to me about diversity or reinvention. Or even AI.

I mean, it’s taken me (you as well) a lifetime to develop into the unique creations we’ve become. There have been stumbles along the way, shoves and distractions. It’s simply life taking shape, the essence of what makes us who we are. Like it, change it or lump it …

“Easy for you to say, Charlie, you’re doing OK.” I hear what you say.

It’s tough to feel positive when you find out you’ve lost your job. It’s tough for many writers; most professions are going through change. From the assembly plant to the medical lab, graphics arts to deal makers. You name it, there’s an App to fix it …

For me, I appreciate that it’s difficult today to turn to the familiar, ready-made income. That’s gone. Many ‘normal’ industry routines have been ‘absorbed’ online or have disappeared through bot-power …

Sure, I’m doing OK. It’s taken some 25 years after finding myself out of favour, out of money, out of prospects. I’ve felt betrayed, alone, yes redundant, but I’ve listened to myself, I talked with friends and found who I was.

This same story I also shared with a friend I’m writing for. Alistair is a solicitor; he’s also a recovering alcoholic. Some years ago, Alistair was an esteemed, well-off figure with the world at his feet … until life tipped him off the rails.

Alistair now coaches and supports those in similar situations to his own. Reflecting on the experience of life, he has found his value (what he’s good at) and decided to share the highs and lows. Alistair has found another path that offers him fulfilment.

You see, we all have a story. People will continue to buy into people if only we take the time to connect and reflect from time to time … and quit trying to adapt where the bot suggests there’s a fit. Most of it is artificial, and much of the time, it doesn’t suit – or offers nothing.

Take time to smile and share with friends. Recall where your skills lie, how much you have to offer as you discover, through sharing, just where the conversation takes you. You are not alone …

Because business is personal.
